Predicting the future I

Can we really predict our future? Or how can we?

Is this a science or an art?
There has been quite a few practices, methods, analogies of predicting the future present since ages.
The west too is not alien to many of them. One of them is the concept of Numerology imported fro the Orientals. It is the science (???) of numbers created out of your name/ birthday/birth location combination with certain weight-age given to each letter of the alphabet. This is then used in different calculations or combinations to reflect events that has happened to you or are supposed to happen in your life. Incases, numerologists also subscribe a slight change of the spelling of your name to tilt the scales of the calculation by adding an alphabet. So at times, Deborah becomes Debra and Kathy may become Cathy.

Another is the use of tarot cards. A set of cards in this case is used by a medium, at a harmonious location. They are spread out in combinations of threes or nines and is supposed to reflect stages of your life and the implications it has on you.

In some countries there is a very identifiable presence of Astrology in the lives of ordinary people. Similar is the science (???) of Palmistry. Both of these are based on the theory of probabilities. As per Astrology, a person who is born on a particular date and time , and location would be having the effects of the nine ( now eight) planets of the solar system in the following ways. It then spells out a general trend of events that are going to happen to thie life of this person during his life. Since the theories of astrology are based on the planetary position during a particular time ( birth), the implications stay constant for the person through out his life. What differs is the interpretation of the astrologer of the said effects of the planets.
There is still the concept of Palmistry which is popular too. It studies the lines, marks and texture, flatness of the palm and its sections to predict life and its guiding events. What makes it different is that over time these lines or markings on a human hand changes and so does the readings of the astrologer. Some are of the opinion of that these marks are created at the time of birth or even before it based on how a baby’s hand or palm is clutched during the initial days. That sets up the basic structure of the palm and thus has its implications felt over time. One story which comes to my mind is that of the French general Napoleon Bonaparte. It is said that he was a man who didn’t have a luck line on his palm. And so when an astrologer pointed it out before a certain important battle in his life, Napoleon was said to have taken a knife and slashed it on his palm to carve out the same line and push his palm back to the astrologer.

So after a short review of the major practices or sciences or alternate theories as it may be of the method of prediction of one’s future, my question is does it hold for you ? Are you able to believe that one of these might be able to give you a fair representation of your future?
Well some of you may, while some may not. But to all of you I would like to project another stream of logic.
